There are many types of hand-knitting yarn — choosing the right one is key to a successful project.

By thickness

  • Bulky (3–6s): fast to knit, thick and warm — hats, scarves, heavy sweaters
  • Medium (8–12s): most versatile, balances warmth and flexibility — suits most patterns
  • Fine (14s+): delicate — complex patterns and lightweight layers

By ply

  • Single ply: soft but easily distorted — next-to-skin items
  • 2-ply: stable, most common — fits most projects
  • Multi-ply: durable — outerwear and high-friction items

Special yarns

  • Ombre/gradient yarn: color transitions without changing yarn
  • Metallic yarn: festive and party decorations
  • Loop/knot yarn: textured, fluffy results
  • Chenille: velvet-like, soft and thick — blankets and cushions

Tips

Beginners: medium 2-ply blend — easy and forgiving. Scarves: wool or wool-acrylic (warm + soft). Hats: acrylic or blends (light + colorfast). Next-to-skin sweaters: merino or cotton (skin-friendly + breathable).
